17 Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.
The same quality that got Moses in trouble with the ruler of Egypt and with his own countrymen, now comes to his rescue. There are seven sisters who are trying to help their father with the chores. Along come some shepherds and they intimidate them and drive them from the watering place. Not much they could do on their own. But Moses is there. He looks like an Egyptian, and has a history of fighting and killing. He has stood up for the underdog before. He has been willing to take action on behalf of the oppressed. But of course, that is what placed him on the Pharaoh’s “Most Wanted” list. But these same qualities are exactly what these seven sisters need at this moment. They need someone to protect them, to stand up for their rights and fight off these other shepherds. And that is what Moses does. But he does something even greater. He doesn’t take advantage of the women. A man who is strong enough to drive off the shepherds would certainly been strong enough to take advantage of these women. He did not even invite himself to dinner. He didn’t imply any need for compensation. He simply served them, and by extension he served their father. Selfless service always pays in the long run. Often there is not a quick result, but in the end, serving others has its great rewards. There might be someone who crosses your path today who needs you to do some selfless service. Don’t be afraid to reach out, even if you are in need. God can do marvelous things when our heart is soft towards others.
