30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Jesus was not going to be an ordinary person. He would be great. He is God’s Son. Just as I am a human being, so my son is also a human being. We share the same nature. Jesus shares the same nature as the Most High. He is God. Much of what is said in these verses point to this fact. These are all appellations written in the Old Testament of the Messiah, the promised Savior. Jesus would be the fulfillment of these Old Testament hopes, dreams and promises. God’s eternal purposes for humankind would be fulfilled in Jesus. Everything that had gone wrong in the Fall, Jesus would put right again. David, the greatest king of Israel’s history, would have an heir to complete the spiritual journey David had begun. But even more than that, David represented the rule and reign of God here on earth. The Lord wanted to rule His people directly, but the people had chosen to have a king instead. They wanted to be like the other nations. What a big mistake! Once you get people involved in ruling, you get taxes, military conscription, confiscation of property, and did I say, taxes. In Jesus, the rule and reign of God is reinstituted. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, God speaks directly to each believer and guides us in our walk with Him. No more middle man. God establishes His eternal kingdom again. No wonder Mary is afraid. This baby would change the world.
