21Oct2009 Acts 16:29-30

29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

I think this man’s fear was twofold. I think he knew something supernatural had happened and he knew he needed to respond to God in some unknown way. I also think he knew his life was in jeopardy. His boss would kill him because he neglected his post. All the doors were open and all the individual shackles were unlocked. Try to explain that to a boss! I am not sure the boss is going to buy the story of an earthquake. So he knows his boss is going to kill him. What I find really interesting is that this jailor rushes in and falls before these two men who were praying and singing. I might have been tempted to fall before the really burly guy with the huge muscles who you would not want to meet in a dark alley. He might be able to provide protection. But he falls before these two singers. There must have been some powerful messages that were conveyed in those prayers and songs. He had heard that message of hope and change, and when he has the chance he responds. It is almost like God provided the earthquake to give him the opportunity to respond that night. God also wanted to show his hand mighty before all the others in prison and even before his accusers the following day. God is in the business of letting people in on His power. Too often we don’t take notice of the mighty things He is doing. We just gloss over when someone comes to faith in Christ. Or when there is an answer to prayer. Or when someone steps up to take on new ministry in obedience to the working of the Holy Spirit in them. I want to encourage you to take notice and offer prayer and singing in response. And then get ready to see the Hand of God work again.
