30Sep2009 Acts 13:32

32 “We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father.'”

God keeps His promises. It had been over 700 years since God made that promise to David. Seven hundred years! That is a long time to wait for a promise to be fulfilled. God did not forget His promise as we sometimes do. He also didn’t get impatient. His timing was perfect, although I can bet those who went into captivity as a result of their rebellion would say something different. The fact that God keeps is promise is good news. We can count on Him. He has promised us a place in heaven if we trust in Him. He has promised to make justice reign here on earth. He promised to remake this universe in accordance with the original design, a place of perfect peace and security, a place where God and humans dwell without sin’s presence or influence. There are many promises that will be fulfilled. God is faithful to keep His promises. Are we? When we say we will do something, do we do it? Can our word be trusted? Or do we throw out our yes’s with ease only to let them dangle in the breeze without substance? If we find ourselves saying ‘yes’ when we really want to say ‘no’, we should take some time to examine why we say ‘yes’. Maybe we are afraid of rejection. Or maybe we don’t like disappointing people. Neither one of those reasons is a good reason to say ‘yes’. ‘No’ would be a much more appropriate answer in those circumstances. God is willing to say ‘no’ to us. He is also willing to make a promise and keep it, even if it means waiting hundreds, or even thousands of years. God’s promises stand the test of time. Most of our words will fade. God’s words will always be here. Learn to trust God’s promises and keep your own promises.
