34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.
Have you ever noticed that when God wants something done He gets us involved! This is exactly what happens with Moses. Stephen is saying his final words before the religious leaders. Soon they will be stoning him to death. He is relaying the history of God’s intervention in the lives of Israel as a nation. Moses was rejected and later became the means of deliverance for the people. God speaks to Moses in a very unusual way. A bush burns but is not consumed by the fire. God speaks to Moses from that bush and tells him the He is concerned about His people and that He is going to deliver them from Egyptian bondage. And then God says He is sending Moses back into Egypt. God needs a person to interact with people. When God shows up it is usually too scary. People are too afraid to really listen. Even those who are followers and servants of His become fearful when He shows up. God needed someone; He needed Moses. Moses had fled Egypt in fear for his life. Now God sends him back to the place from which he fled. And ultimately, this is what happened with Jesus. God had to come personally and get involved in fixing the sin problem. It was not enough for the Lord to say our sins were forgiven. He had to come personally to demonstrate that forgiveness. He came to do what only a perfect human being could do. At first He was rejected like Moses. Only later was He accepted. Stephen is saying to these religious leaders, “You rejected Jesus, but He is the One who will deliver Israel.”
