18Aug2009 2 Timothy 4:4

4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Imagine giving up what you know to be true for something you know to be false. Most of us would not willingly admit to such activity, but many of us do make that shift. Myths are much easier to dismiss in our minds than truth. That is why there has been such a push in our culture to classify the Christian Scriptures in the same group as myths. There is a constant comparison to religious material that fits the “myth” genre. But the obvious differences are never highlighted. The account of creation is dismissed because, “we know that the Big Bang happened.” We hear it in the Global Warming debate. The most vocal proponents keep saying that anyone who denies the reality of man-made global warming is like those who deny the moon landing and believe in a flat earth. This tactic of choosing myth over truth keeps going today. If you accept the truth then you will be moving toward the God who has moral demands on your life. And we don’t want moral demands. We want to be able to live anyway we want without consequences. We want to be able to kill babies in the womb without the consequences of guilt and attending ethical implications later on in life. We want to devalue life in one instance and value it in another, all at our choosing and limited amoral value system. Instead of a moral system based on objective truth, our society wants Jell-O ethics, soft enough for everyone to swallow, but not hard enough to pin any decision down. We have turned from truth to myths, multiple myths. As I write there is a WeightWatchers magazine in my line of sight. One of the ads shows a woman sitting in the Lotus position, with candles all around her, a clear acceptance of Buddhism. But can you imagine if there were a clear Christian image included in this advertisement? Not a chance! Only relativism will do! No presentation of the Truth. We don’t want to be tied down. We want to be free. But freedom to believe a myth gets us nowhere. Only Truth can truly satisfy.
