18 But not a hair of your head will perish.

This is an extraordinary statement coming in the middle of a proclamation that some will be killed for their faith! If we are killed, how can the hair of your head not be involved? Jesus knows that this body is only a temporary dwelling. We get a new model when we enter heaven! Most of us don’t worry too much about our hair. Well, I take that back, most men don’t worry about their hair. Well, I take that back, most bald men don’t worry about their hair. Well …. Jesus point is that the person who enters eternity does not get touched by torture and death. Our earthly body is only a temporary tent that we live in. We exchange it at the gate of death for one that does not have the same physical limitations that our current model has. Persecution and death are not the enemy. Our lack of intimacy with God is our enemy. Only the lack of intimacy with God leads to our perishing. It is the real enemy. And we can do something about that. We can spend time doing things that foster intimacy. Time in the Word, prayer and fellowship can help. But they can’t be check-the-box activities. They must grow out of a desire to be intimate with the Lord. So next time you stand before a mirror and do you hair, remember that there are many more important things in this life than your hair (spoken as a bald guy who enjoys his baldness). Your children are more important than your hair. Your spouse is as well. And remember the great promise that Jesus makes to us. Even when persecution comes, we will be safe. Our bodies may get destroyed in the process, and the end may be painful, but they can’t touch the real you. Jesus has that safely in His hands. Cancer can’t touch the real you. Tragic accidents can’t touch the real you. War can’t touch the real you. Jesus has you in His hands.
