27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.
The activities of daily life never seem to change. Even over thousands of years things don’t seem to change. Is it any wonder that our lives seem to get boring? The laundry needs to get done. Dishes must be washed. Oil must be changed. The commute to work, the filing of that report, that follow-up phone calls all need to be done. No matter what you do, repetition is part of life. So how do we keep life from boring us to death? The activities of life can get so monotonous that we get lulled into complacency. And when complacency hits, then we miss out on what God is doing in our day. This is what Jesus is pointing to in this text. Both the people of Noah’s time and the neighbors of Lot were not paying attention to the things happening around them. They were too busy with the day to day activities to see God show up in their midst. That can create quite a problem! Both of these men were the ones saved when judgment happened. They were paying attention and they were spared. They were watching for the activity of God and both of them became involved in cooperating with God’s work. They both got off the sideline and acted. God is moving today. In fact, He wants to move even more that He is able. He needs people willing to get off the sideline and be involved. It is easy to allow the activities of life to sidetrack us from the work of God. After all, the laundry does need to be done. You can’t afford to just keep buying new clothes and throwing the dirty ones away. You don’t want to eat off paper plates forever. You have to take the trash out sometime. You have to restock the shelves or you get fired. And despite political rhetoric, they will foreclose on your home and you will be living on the streets. And God wants to use you to accomplish His purpose. Are you willing to be involved?
