46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.
The disciples got caught up in the contest in which so many of us get caught. Position and prestige are such a large part of our society. The size of our house and the type of car we drive show that greatness. Bill Gates has once again risen to the top of riches people in the world. The family of the Walmart empire are the richest family in the world. The insiders in the Hollywood crowd are always pushing to be at the top. The camera and spotlights, red carpets and extravagant parties are all designed to highlight their own greatness. If the disciples were here today I can imagine them calling in their PR teams in an effort to promote themselves. Jesus will have none of this. He could have used his miracles to rise to the top. When he was on the cross he could have floated down to impress the crowd. But He was not going to play that game. Jesus’ life demonstrated His knowledge of His purpose in coming. He came in order to serve. He did not serve Himself but others. Jesus has a small child stand in front of the disciples and tells them this child is greater than you are in the kingdom. Greatness is about knowing in simplicity who God is and trusting. Today you will have opportunity to take the position you deserve. You have the choice to lift someone else up or to take the glory for yourself. Your choice. I suggest that you let someone else sit in the important place. Enjoy the back seat. Take the lower spot and enjoy seeing someone else getting the spotlight. There is a great freedom that takes over when you place yourself lower than you really are. By serving others you have the opportunity humble yourself and watch God work on your character. Take a lower seat today.
