25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
After falling asleep in the boat as they cross the lake, Jesus’ panicking disciples wake Jesus from his sleep. They are afraid they are going to drown. Jesus wakes up and tells the winds and waves to behave themselves, and they quiet down immediately. Notice Jesus statement to his disciples: Where is your faith? Not how much, or what kind, but where is your faith. Either Jesus couldn’t see their faith at all, or their faith was placed in the wrong place. You might say that they had faith in Jesus because they woke him up. But if they woke him up because of their faith, why were they amazed when He calmed the storm? They indeed did wake him because of their fear. Their faith had been in their own ability to keep the ship afloat. After all some of them were fishermen, professionals in their trade. They certainly knew more about riding out a storm than a carpenter! Sometimes we are in the same position as the disciples. We try using all our resources to solve a problem and then when that fails we run to Jesus for help. Jesus would ask us the same question, wouldn’t He? Where is our faith? If we trust Jesus, then when He acts on behalf of the Kingdom, we should be thankful, grateful, but not surprised. He wants to act. He just needs a people who will have faith. That does not mean that we can twist God’s arm and force Him to do something that is against His will. It does mean that He desires vessels through whom He can work in accomplishing His will. We know that the whole world is subject to His command. When He acts we need to be aware of those actions and offer our humble praise and thanksgiving. Sometimes our faith is so small that it is hard to see. Remember, it only takes faith the size of a mustard seed (a very small seed) placed in Jesus for big things to take place. It is not the size of our faith but where we place it that is important. Let’s put our little bit of faith in Jesus and see what happens.
