14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.
So many people who begin the journey of following Jesus end up not producing any fruit. Their lives become spiritually unproductive and thus are a waste from a heavenly perspective. Our purpose is to receive the Word, let it mature and then produce fruit that nurtures others. We get wrapped up in the worries of life. Our focus moves from heaven and eternity and the provision of an Almighty God to our own meager resources. If we have to depend on what we possess we are in deep trouble. No wonder we start to worry! Or maybe we get wrapped up enjoying the benefits of having wealth. We pursue wealth rather than pursuing God. But all wealth is temporary. Take a look at what has happened in the stock market in the last year. And the proposed tax burden of about $12K per taxpayer. There goes more of our wealth handed over to the government in order to give us $65 a month in our paycheck. I am glad I am not seeking wealth to satisfy my deepest longings. I would be facing a big empty checkbook right about now. But the Lord has promised to take care of our needs. Maybe it is time for us to tighten our belts and reach out with our wealth to those who truly need help with the goal being their faith in Christ. Wealth cannot truly satisfy, so let us give up the pursuit of it and pursue the Lord instead. Pleasures become stale after repeated use. Take a look at the amusement industry. They have to continue to create new, more thrilling rides in order to continue bringing in the customers. Thrill junkies have to continue to invent new ways of generating adrenalin. The old ways stop producing the same level of pleasure as they once did. Pleasure as a pursuit leads to emptiness. Only seeking the Lord is truly satisfying. If we seek the Lord we will be fruitful and fulfilled. If we worry, seek wealth or pleasure, we will remain unfruitful. Which will it be for you?
