7Feb2009 Genesis 5:22

22 And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

It appears that something happened when Enoch became a father. He became a father at age 65 and then for the next 300 years the text says he “walked with God.” Most of the other people mentioned in this list of people have absolutely nothing included about their lives. It simply says the lived a number of years, had a particular son, had other children somewhere in the mix, and then they lived more years and died. Here the account says that Enoch did some of those things, but also that he had a special relationship with God. It was almost as if Enoch were back in the Garden walking in the cool of the evening, God at his side. I have moments when God’s presence is palpable. My heart melts in awe and wonder, tears of joy and sorrow well up, and I humble myself because I know God is walking with me in my garden. But with Enoch, something happened when this son was born. We don’t know if it was a difficult birth and his wife died or lived. We don’t know the prayer he prayed when his son was born, but we do know that from that point on he walked with God. It often takes a crisis for us to turn our lives fully to God. It is unfortunate that we don’t take the opportunity to walk with God without the crisis. I have had several times of crisis in my life. They were not pleasant at the time, but I can now look back and see God’s grace in the middle of those times, using the squeeze of those moments to draw me closer to Himself. I have to admit that I have not always responded correctly to those squeezing. But sometimes I have, and the result has been worth the squeeze. Crisis conversions can stick, just like Enoch. Mine has! Almost 33 years ago God used a crisis in my life to get my attention and I have been paying attention ever since. Will you let God speak to you in your crisis?
