22Jan2009 Genesis 2:25

25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Imagine that, naked with no shame. There was no need to cover up, nothing to hide. Their relationship was one we might call transparent. They were there with and for each other with no ulterior motives. All their needs were provided for by the abundance of the Garden and by the Creator who placed them in the Garden. We don’t know how long they spent in the Garden prior to their sinful choice that doomed them to wear clothing. But you can bet those in Northern Minnesota are thankful for warm jackets right now! Most of us in the Northern Hemisphere are thankful for clothing in January. We can deduct from this verse that they must have lived in a warmer, probably tropical climate where temperatures are more consistent and warm. But unlike us, they had done anything wrong, so they had no need to hide. Even small kids show shame when they do something they know is wrong. This is true even when they are doing something that they have not specifically been prohibited from doing. From a fairly early age, children act in ways that demonstrate their knowledge of right and wrong. When they reach for the delicate object on the end table, look over at you knowingly, and then pull the object anyway, they are showing an internal compass. Or when they do something wrong and you find them sitting in the corner by themselves. You ask them what is wrong and they say nothing, and then after a few minutes of prying their confession comes forth. Adam and Eve at this point had no sense of guilt or shame. They were free as birds, no cares, no worries. And they traded that all in for some fruit!
