18 The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
Here is an amazing statement. God has repeatedly stated that what He has made is “good”, or even “very good.” Now he looks at Adam’s singleness and says that this singleness is “not good.” Wait a minute, God created something that is not good? God created man with an emptiness that can only be filled with relationship with other humans. At this point Adam has relationship with God and his singleness is still labeled “not good.” Even his relationship with God did not stop God from labeling this singleness negatively. We are created to be connected to each other. When we are not connected we are missing something that is vital to our existence. When we are isolated from each other we are not fulfilling God’s full design for our lives. We need to be vitally connected to each other. We need more than a relationship with God, we need relationships with each other. In the Hebrew the word we translate “alone” could also be translated “part”, as in a part of a car, or a piece of the pie. Human beings are not complete without each other. God’s solution is to make a helper who acts as a counterpart to Adam. This other one will complete Adam, balance him, help him fit into something larger than himself. Remember, God is the One saying Adam needs something else. We need each other to complete us. The relationships we have with other people make us more fully what we are designed to be as human beings. Some say today that all we need is a relationship with God to make us whole as human beings. But this verse indicates that we need each other, that we meet a need in each other that even a relationship with God can not satisfy. So get connected to some Jesus-followers.
