17Jan2009 Genesis 2:7

7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Man is more than just dust from the ground. Evolution says just that. Evolution says we are a random assembly of accidents. But the reality is that we are formed by God. He took existing materials and made us. But the next step makes us unique. He breathes into us the breath of life. This breath is more than simply the inflating of our lungs. The animals that God created have air in their lungs. Our body is formed and our soul and spirit are created. We are created to be a complex being with both material and non-material parts. Gen 1:26&27 talked about the creation of our being. This verse puts the body formed together with the spirit created. We are a compound being. This is the universal message of the Scriptures. We are more than our body. We are more than our soul and spirit. We are these together in a unique mix that makes us human. This breath that God breathes into us is not simply air. God created us as creatures made in His image. This second part, this breath of life, made us like God in a special way. We will live beyond this body. This part that entered us when God breathed makes us live forever. I don’t know about you, but I am glad God breathed into us, making us more than a random assembly of accidents, without purpose or design. Because God breathed into us we have purpose and design. Our lives can make sense. We fit into something much bigger than the laundry or the traffic jam. One of our tasks as a Jesus-follower is to discover God’s design for our lives. We need to answer the question, “How do we to fit into our small corner of the world?” So next time you are tempted to think that your life is an accident, remember that God has breathed into you and you have a divine purpose in the universe.
