12Jan2009 Genesis 1:16

16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

Have you ever wondered what would it be like if we didn’t have a moon that lit the night sky? Yes, it would be darker at night, but what other effect would having no moon produce here on earth? If you said no tidal changes for the oceans you would get an A for today’s science lesson. The oceans would not be pulled by the moon’s gravitational field. That pulling of the mass of the ocean creates great currents and pulls nutrients from the bottom up to the surface. The tide also moves coastal water away from the coast, distributing the coastal nutrients more rapidly away from the coast. The wave action oxygenates the water making marine life more abundant at the surface making fishing abundant along coastlines. There would be no surfing and sunning on the beach would be limited to the narrow strip of sand that exists at high tide. The lapping of the ocean waves would only be gentle laps, except during storms. You see, not only would it be darker during the nighttime hours, but the ecology of the oceans and therefore life on earth would be very different. There would be a significant difference in the marine life that is dependent on the oxygen and nutrition rich environment of the coastline which is greatly enhanced by tidal action. God knew what He was doing when He put the moon in orbit around this planet. The sun and the moon govern the day and the night. Each has great influence. Each exercises authority like a government official, overseeing and influencing things that happen in their respective domains. The sun provides the energy to warm the planet and the moon provides the energy to move the oceans. This combination of effects makes life possible, even abundant on this planet. God made the perfect place for humans to live. Don’t be afraid to look at the moon and thank God for its existence and influence.
