19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Some want to say that God is silent, that He is not speaking in this day and age, that He has finished communicating with this world. They want to silence His voice with their godless, wicked behavior. They hope to drown out His voice with their sin. But these two verses show the impossibility of that quest. God Himself has made Himself known to everyone. Everyone can see that He is powerful and that He is divine, very different from us. Notice the verbs used. God has made it plain, they have clearly seen it, and they have understood it and as a result their excuses have been erased. I remember in elementary school proving a teacher wrong in math class. The teacher made a statement about a geometric shape and I said he was wrong. I went to the board and drew a shape that contradicted his statement. The proof of his error was right in front of him. Everyone saw it, but he refused to admit it in front of the class. You see, I was the kid who had too much energy and never paid attention, so I couldn’t possibly be right. Because of my behaviors, probably ADHD at work, my input was dismissed. People who want to continue in their sin try to dismiss the evidence of God’s existence, but God won’t let them get away with it. God Himself makes his power and nature plain to them. He puts it right in front of their eyes so they can’t miss it. Every day they have to stubbornly look at the proof and dismiss it again and again. And God makes sure they know what they are doing when they dismiss the clear evidence. That is what makes them without excuse. Are there plain truths about God that you have been trying to sweep under the carpet so that you are not responsible for them? I would encourage you to simply accept the truths and move toward the Lord rather than trying to hide your eyes at every turn to miss the truth that is plainly in view.
