Order from Chaos

Genesis 1:2 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

It takes God to bring order out of chaos. Order does not just happen, ask any mother of small children. It takes a lot of work to keep the toys lined up on those shelves! There are mysterious energies that cause chaos in moments when the children come into a room! The blink of an eye and it is time to put the toys back on the shelves. Have you ever noticed that there is no “unrusting” compound? But if you add exposure to water and air you get rust. The metal just seems to fall apart. Why does it not fall together? Chaos does not naturally become organized complexity. God must be involved in that process. In the remaining portion of this first chapter of the Scriptures we see the outline of the structure that God imposes on this formless and empty place we call earth. I believe God reveals this process outlined in a seven day format to teach us a valuable lesson. If God worked six and rested the seventh, then we should trust Him enough to earn our living during the six days and honor Him by not earning on the seventh. But I digress. Notice that the Spirit of God is right there, present over this formless and empty earth. If anything is going to happen to bring order to chaos, the Spirit will be present and active. The disorder you see in your life needs the Spirit of God to hover over and bring order. We need God’s active involvement in our chaotic lives. If things seem to be falling part in your life, it is probably because the Spirit of God is not being acknowledged and allowed to work. He is the One who will bring structure and order to your world. And He is hovering over your life waiting for permission to act. On the day of Pentecost the Spirit manifested His presence looking like flames of fire hovering over the heads of those assembled. He was bringing order out of chaos. Are you willing to let the Spirit bring order to your chaos?
