14 They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.
Do you remember wrestling with your parents when you were a toddler? How about when you were an adolescent? The younger you were, the more the fight was one sided. Your parent certainly had the strength to defeat you in the wrestling, but often times would feign defeat at your hands, usually with great laughter and lots of cuddles. Your parent choose not to use their full power during that ‘wrestling’ match because their long term motive was to love on you, not prove their greater strength. They wanted to build you up, not tear you down. Usually those matches change as we get older, and then they usually stop altogether, usually because the teenagers become stronger than the parents! And besides that, someone could get hurt. Without someone with demonstrably greater power, enough power to control the circumstances, things can get ugly. Pretend wrestling can turn into actual fighting, two individuals battling to demonstrate greater power prowess. There is coming a day when the toddlers of the world, the earthly leaders, will gather together in an effort to defeat God. What a joke! These earthly kings have chosen to believe that their puny strength can defeat the God of unlimited strength and power. God has enough strength to control even this battle. It will start when He chooses, follow the path He prescribes, and end precisely as He determines. Nothing will take Him by surprise. That is because He is God Almighty. He is the One who possesses in Himself all power and strength. If there is any power and strength in the universe, that power and strength all point back to God. Just as that child has power in the wrestling match with a parent, so other powers exercise power only within the limits that God permits. In an instant God can remove all derivative power, just like a parent can end the wrestling match with the child. The difficult part for us is recognizing that we are that child, exercising power only at the will of God. We are not independent beings with our own power source. If God chooses to unplug us from His power grid, power ceases to exist in our lives.
