16Sep2008 Heb 4:12

12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

God’s Word is an extension of Himself. That means where His Word is read and understood, God is able to work. He has chosen to use His Word to accomplish His purposes in the world. The Word carries the message of the finished work Jesus did on the cross. Without the written Word, how would we know for certain what happened and what those events mean to us? What I find amazing is that whenever the Word is received by a people, they change. There might be some cultural nuances, but their lives become more holy, more reflective of God’s character. As I have met people from around the world who are Jesus-followers, there is a connection, even when we don’t speak the same language. God lives in them as He lives in me. That common relationship with the Creator God connects our lives and our spirits. I can imagine that Christmas during WWII during the Battle of the Bulge which is depicted in the series Band of Brothers. There were probably some Jesus-followers on each side of that battle. As the singing lofted across that large open field, earthly enemies were united in spirit. The Word had changed lives on both sides and they were each honoring their government’s authority while they served their countries. Some of those who died on that battle field were united with their enemies in death; they arrived in heaven side by side. Mortal enemies in life, united in Jesus at death. That is because the same Word does accomplish its work. If you need change in your life, start reading the Word every day. Start in the book of John. Ask Jesus to speak to you through the Word. Ask Him to change you. The Word is active, alive. If you read it and believe it, you will be changed.
