14Sep2008 Heb 3:6

6 But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

I am often amazed at the lack of care, stewardship if you will, that some people have for their property. I am also amazed at the misplaced care of others. It is inevitable as you drive around almost any American neighborhood on a Saturday that you will see people washing their cars. Some of these people almost look like they are in a state of worship, focusing so much on their vehicles! If there is one thing I have learned about investments and value, it is this: cars lose value. Houses on the other hand almost always gain value. That same neighborhood will display a variety of levels of care for those houses and yards. My neighborhood has houses with tacky lawn ornaments and some with immaculate landscaping and lawn. Some have weeds growing up everywhere to heights weed-lovers would be proud to observe. There are piles of toys and broken objects in some yards. Some of the houses have roof shingles missing from a storm a year ago. Other houses look like they came from a magazine. Each reflects, to one degree or another, the faithfulness of the owner over their property, their priorities in life. Jesus is over us as the Church, His Body. He owns us, having purchased us with his life-blood. He wants us to reflect His character, His care and concern for a dying world. And that will happen, if we hold on. He will work in us, cleaning us up and polishing our chrome, if we don’t give up. He will trim our hedges and power-wash the mildew. Our job is to let Him work. We need to stay courageous in the face of opposition, knowing that Jesus will never leave our side. We need to keep our focus on the eternal hope we have in Him, heaven itself. If we hold on to Him, He will be able to do His work in us. And what a wonderful work it is!
