4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
Our purpose in life is to be holy and blameless before God. Our purpose is not to be happy and content, or any other short sighted, narrow goal. God has huge goals, impossible goals, eternal goals, goals that span space and time. Why would anyone settle for little, puny reasons to live when God has such huge, exciting ones? But what does holy and blameless look like when it is lived in an ordinary human life? Both of these characteristics are characteristics of God Himself. Imagine that, we are to mirror the character of God. Talk about a huge goal, this certainly is one. Holy has the meaning that you are recognized and being connected to the service of God. You are a vessel that is only used in service to Him, that the quality of your life is such that it could never be used to service merely human goals. Wow, what a privilege to be such an object, and we are those objects. We were created to be just that kind of vessel recognized as having an intimate connection to the Creator of the universe. The next characteristic is that we are blameless. This carries the idea that we are innocent, that we have no moral defects, that the finger of blame could never be pointed at us. This is what we were chosen for, a life that is holy and blameless. I don’t know about you, but in so many respects this is exactly what my life is not! I have to be honest, when I look in the mirror of God’s Word, I see so many areas that are not holy and blameless. And yet this is what God has designed us to be. We are the best designer jeans, the most expensive custom car in the world. We are made to fit God perfectly, to out-perform every other creature in the universe at displaying the greatness of God. Just thinking about this purpose sends me to my knees in wonder and thanksgiving, that God would choose ME to fit Him and show Him off. And just think, He has chosen you for the same purposes! Let Him shine through today.
