1 Corinthians 4:1

1 So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God.

Picture yourself in the service of the President of the United States. You are a new maid whose job it is to vacuum the Oval Office. You begin your task, having been assured that the President will be out of the office long enough for you to finish your job. Right as you begin to vacuum under his desk, the door to his private office opens and in walks the President. What do you do? Do you continue your job, or do you quickly, quietly gather up your vacuum and leave without being noticed, blending into the woodwork? One thing I am sure you don’t do is sit down in his chair behind the desk, kick up your feet, and tell him to have a seat! You know your place and you have been instructed about his place. You have no illusion that you are the President. But in the church, do you try to be someone important, wanting a title so others will see you at work? Who are we, just servants of the Master! People are coming to meet with Him, not us. We must get in the habit of blending into the woodwork when Jesus enters a room. We want all the focus to be on Him, not on us. This is such a hard task in a culture of red carpets and paparazzi. We are the men at the Oscars who carry the official results in briefcase. No one takes our pictures, asks for our autographs, or even notices us. We just slip in the back door, deliver our ‘important’ package, and then slip out again. If only we could get in that habit, all eyes on Jesus, no one looking at us.
