19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.
Caught in the cycle, stuck on the treadmill, doomed to repeat yourself. Do these statements sound familiar? You are not alone. We have all, universally, done the opposite of what we knew deep in our hearts was the proper, the right thing to do. As far as we can tell, animals have no regrets. Their moral compass was never installed. That is the sole purview of mankind. We are the ones who struggle with the rights and wrongs of our actions and the actions of others. We are caught in the internal world war. And there is no way out of it. Paul was a forgiven believer in Jesus when he was writing these words, and he was still struggling within himself. David du Plessis is considered one of the founders of the Charismatic movement around the world. When he was in his seventies he was asked by a struggling young man following one of his talks when his lustful thoughts would cease. Du Plessis is reported to have said, “When I get there, I will let you know.” It is not the lack of battle that determines the believer’s walk, but your direction in the battle. Are you turning more toward the Master, or toward your own desires? If in doubt, turn toward the Master.
