The best things in life are free. “Free to do what I want” the advertisement sings out. But the wise adage speaks to the reality, “Nothing in life is free.” That is the reality. Someone pays for healthcare for the poor. The poor certainly do in higher death rates. The unwise are paying for it now as their adjustable rate mortgages for the too-big houses become unpayable. Our bodies pay for it as we are forced to exercise longer to get rid of the 1200 calories from the seven layer double chocolate smothered-in-sweetness desert. The millions of losers pay for the lottery winner’s new house, boat, cars, jewelry…. There is always a payment somewhere, maybe not from our pocket, but from someone’s. The price that allows us to come to God just like Abraham, simply by trusting what was spoken, was the life of perfection that Jesus lived and the death of sacrifice He died for us. Let us never forget the price paid on our behalf. Salvation may be free to us, but it cost God everything.
